Actualités : Bird Migration in the Arcachon Basin

An Exceptional Ecosystem

The Arcachon Basin is an ecosystem of remarkable richness, home to a stunning diversity of migratory birds. The region benefits from extensive environmental protections, including its designation as the 6th Marine Natural Park in France, along with two National Nature Reserves: the Banc d'Arguin and the Prés-Salés d'Arès and Lège-Cap Ferret.

The Arcachon Basin is also adorned with five sites classified as natural monuments, providing birds with ideal habitats for survival and reproduction. Among these sites are the majestic Dune of Pilat, the Île aux Oiseaux, the Domaine de Graveyron, the coastal area of the Abatilles Park, and the Piraillan Reservoirs. These protected areas offer vital sanctuaries for migratory birds that travel vast distances each year.

Six municipalities in the Basin are part of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park, further enhancing environmental protection and promoting the conservation of natural habitats for birds and other wildlife.

At the heart of this ecological haven lies the Teich Ornithological Reserve, spanning 110 hectares. This sanctuary provides a crucial refuge for nearly 328 bird species, safeguarding their natural habitats from growing threats such as urbanization and environmental degradation.

A Stunning Diversity

The Arcachon Basin is situated along one of the most important migratory routes on the planet: the East Atlantic Flyway, traversed by tens of millions of birds each year. A wide variety of migratory species frequent the Basin, with some traveling thousands of kilometers annually, undertaking epic journeys between breeding grounds in the northern hemisphere and wintering areas in the southern hemisphere.

Among these intrepid travelers are waders like sandpipers, plovers, and curlews, which stop to rest and feed in the Basin's wetlands before continuing their migration.

Birds of prey, such as harriers and falcons, also rely on the Arcachon Basin as a critical stopover during their migratory journeys, taking advantage of thermal currents and expansive hunting grounds.

Additionally, the coastal zones of the Basin host a multitude of seabirds, including gulls, terns, and cormorants, which find nesting and resting sites in these coastal habitats during migration.

The preservation of these natural areas is therefore of paramount importance for the conservation of migratory bird populations.

By protecting essential habitats and minimizing human disturbances, we can ensure the survival of these iconic species and sustain the ecological richness of the Arcachon Basin for future generations.
